What is sin?

Sin is a transgression of a religious or moral law, especially when deliberate. Deliberate disobedience to the known will of God. A condition of estrangement from God resulting from such disobedience. Something regarded as being shameful, deplorable, or utterly wrong. intr.v. sinned, sin•ning, sins To violate a religious or moral law. To commit an offense or violation. Transgression of the law of God; disobedience of the divine command; any violation of God's will, either in purpose or conduct; moral deficiency in the character; iniquity; as, sins of omission and sins of commission.

What is sin in laymen’s terms you may ask? Answer revealed below.

Sin is doing the exact opposite of what God tells us to do. And by us doing the exact opposite of what He (God) tells us to do, this choice and or action is disobeying God and disobeying God is sin. Every time that you and I sin we break God's law (Exodus 20:3-17), and every time we break God's law we sin. In fact, sin is lawlessness. Read (1 John 3:4) (James 2:10).

Sin is what separates us from God and sin is the reason why we die. But the glorious news that God is declaring to the people of the world is that Jesus conquered sin and death for us (for you, for me, for all of humanity that will accept him) when he died for us on the cross, as the perfect sacrifice and as the perfect payment for man’s sins! Jesus arose from the grave three days later proving that he is God’s Son and also proving he is triumphant over sin and death as we will be for those who believe in him, for he (Jesus) has conquered it (sin and death ) victoriously for us on our behalf when he arose from the grave!

(Romans 3:23)

For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.

(Romans 6:23)

For the wages of sin is death; but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord!
